Do online lessons get results? How are they different from an in-person club?

Results come not from the format but from regularity and the child’s interest. That’s why our lessons aren’t lectures: the coach analyses games, sets puzzles and plays together with the group, and the children look forward to the next session. At the same time, online removes everything that usually gets in the way of studying for a long time. You don’t have to take your child across town and lose an evening on the road, you choose a coach by level rather than by address, and the cold season doesn’t turn into a month of missed lessons. The board on screen is easier to see than a demonstration board from the back row, and we put together each group strictly from children of the same level — the nearest in-person club can’t always offer that.

At what age should my child start? And what if they can’t play at all?

We teach children aged 5 to 17 and most often start from scratch — there’s no need to know the rules in advance. For little ones we explain the first moves through stories and play; for older children we go straight to games and puzzles. If your child already plays, the coach will assess their level at the free lesson and find a group where it’s neither boring nor too hard. And it’s never “too late”: a teenager who starts at 13 can comfortably catch up with those who have played since nursery — they just go at a different pace.

How does the free lesson work, and do I have to pay for it?

The first lesson is free, and you don’t need to link a card. The coach gets to know your child, plays a game with them and along the way sees what is already working and what needs more practice. After the lesson you get feedback: current level, strengths and what would suit your child better — a group or one-to-one lessons. Then it’s up to you: if you want to continue, we’ll find a group and a schedule; if not, you keep the free Start plan with the puzzle trainer and a monthly tournament.

How long is a lesson and how often should my child study?

A standard lesson is 45 minutes twice a week. At this pace your child doesn’t get tired and doesn’t have time to forget the material between sessions. On the Prime Focus and Prime Champion plans, a lesson lasts an hour: there is more game analysis and tournament preparation. Once a week is possible too, but progress will be slower — part of each lesson goes on revision. Between sessions, 10–15 minutes of puzzles a day on our trainer is enough to reinforce the skill.

How can I tell that the lessons are working?

You can see progress in three things. The first is the game itself: your child stops blundering pieces, starts explaining their moves and fairly soon beats the rest of the family. The second is the numbers: puzzles solved on the trainer, rating on the playing platform and results in our tournaments. The third is the coach’s feedback: what has been mastered, what is still hard and what we are working on next. We don’t promise a rating category in a month. But after two or three months of regular lessons, even parents with no chess experience notice the difference in their child’s play.

What do we need for lessons: equipment, software, subscriptions?

A computer or laptop with a camera, headphones and a stable internet connection. A tablet will do too, but with a mouse it’s easier for a child to move the pieces and they get distracted less. As for software, just Zoom and a browser: the board, puzzles and games open from a link. You don’t need to buy chess software, courses or equipment — all materials are included in the lessons.

Do we need to set up a chessboard during lessons?

No, you won’t need a real board. Lessons take place on an interactive board: the coach shows a position on screen, and your child moves the pieces straight away — it’s quicker and clearer than setting them up by hand. If you have a chess set at home, it will come in handy for playing with the family and for in-person tournaments, but it isn’t needed for lessons.

What if my child is ill or misses a lesson?

Just let the coach or manager know in advance — the lesson won’t be lost. For one-to-one lessons we move the lesson to another convenient time; in a group we’ll offer to join another group at the same level or go over the topic separately. Either way, the coach will send materials and puzzles on the missed topic so that your child comes back prepared.

What if internet restrictions apply? How will the lesson take place?

Our main platform is Zoom. If it’s unavailable, we switch to Yandex Telemost: it works without a VPN and isn’t affected by the restrictions. The coach sends the link in advance, so the lesson will go ahead either way. If the connection does drop, the coach will wait for your child and add the lost minutes to this lesson or the next one.

My child doesn’t speak Russian well. What should I do?

That’s not a problem — quite the opposite. Many parents living abroad deliberately send their children to Russian-speaking chess coaches: the child learns chess and improves their Russian at the same time — a win on two fronts at once. Chess words are simple and come up again and again from lesson to lesson, and half of the explaining happens right on the board, so the language barrier goes away quickly. And if another language suits you better, lessons on the Prime Champion plan are available in English and Spanish. 😉
