Why coaches leave private tutoring

A good coach’s problem isn’t chess — it’s everything around it

Four reasons strong coaches burn out working for themselves. We have dealt with each one — otherwise coaches wouldn’t stay with us for a second season.

01

“Sometimes there are students, sometimes there aren’t”

Over the summer the group falls apart, and in September you rebuild it from scratch. Your income depends on who got in touch this month.

With us: recruitment, advertising and filling groups are our job and our cost. The timetable is set for the season, not the month; if a child leaves, we fill the place.

02

“Half the day goes on things other than chess”

Messages with parents, payment reminders, hunting for free slots, receipts and contracts. Half your time isn’t coaching at all.

With us: payments, rescheduling, missed lessons and complaints are handled by support. The coach does the lesson, the group chat and a short monthly report using a template.

03

“Children drop out, and it’s not clear why”

A beginner and a rated player in the same group: the first is bored, the second struggles. The parent sees no progress and leaves after two months.

With us: groups are formed strictly by level after an assessment, and progress is marked by stages, rating categories and tournaments. Parents get a report once a month.

04

“The rate is whatever you can negotiate”

Tutoring platforms take a commission and push you into undercutting, clubs pay “by the scale”, and when a lesson is cancelled, the coach pays.

With us: your rate is fixed before your first lesson and can’t be changed unilaterally. Pay comes twice a month with a breakdown for every lesson.

5 formats · from part-time to senior coach

Choose how you want to work

Formats can be combined: coaches usually start with two groups, add one-to-one students, and after a season take on tournament training or mentoring. Your rate is reviewed along with the format.

Main format
♙ Level 1

Small groups

700–1 100 ₽per 45-minute lesson

A group of 4–7 children at one level, two lessons a week. The most predictable income: a timetable for the whole season and the same children week after week.

  • We recruit the group and fill any places
  • Lesson plans and materials are ready
  • Children at one level — after an assessment
  • 2–6 groups depending on your load
For: coaches who enjoy leading a class and keeping a group engaged
♘ Level 2

One-to-one lessons

750–1 150 ₽per 45-minute lesson

One student and a clear goal: a rating category, a school olympiad, a first tournament. Only the first lesson has no plan — after that you lead the student yourself using our template.

  • The student comes already assessed
  • We agree the timetable with the family, not you
  • Cancellations and rescheduling follow school rules
  • Higher rate than for groups
For: coaches who like focused work and game analysis
♗ Level 3

Prime tournament training

1 200–1 400 ₽per 60-minute lesson

Children from the 2nd rating category upwards who are going for results. This needs tournament experience: you analyse the student’s games, build an opening repertoire and guide them through the competition calendar.

  • Students aiming for a rating category and title norms
  • Analysis of the student’s own games
  • Support at online tournaments
  • The highest rate in the school
For: Candidate Masters, National Masters and masters with tournament experience
♖ Flexible schedule

Part-time

From 4 lessonsa week, around your calendar

For those for whom chess isn’t their only commitment: tournaments, studies, work at a club. You take one or two groups in convenient slots and don’t have to carry the whole season in your head.

  • We fit the schedule around your tournament calendar
  • Away at a competition? We arrange cover
  • We never increase your load without your agreement
  • You can move up to a full load at any time
For: active players, students and coaches with a main job
♕ Level 4 · by invitation

Senior coach and mentor

Higher rate + extra payfor leading an area and mentoring

A role for a coach who has grown within the school: you teach your own groups, supervise 3–5 coaches and help shape the programme. It’s not a “boss” but a coach of coaches — and the only way to influence the school’s method.

  • Mentoring new coaches and running candidates’ trial lessons
  • Teaching-method Wednesdays: lesson reviews and team training
  • Helping refine the programme and materials
  • A fixed monthly supplement on top of your per-lesson rate
  • Priority when strong students are allocated
For: coaches with 3+ years of experience who care about the method, not just their own group

30 seconds

Not sure which format suits you?

Three questions — and we’ll show you the format to start with, along with the rate and workload.

Question 1 of 3

What appeals to you more?

What you get

Thirteen things you would otherwise have to do yourself

These aren’t “perks of the job” — they are what our side of the work is made of. Filter by what matters most to you.

♟Key

Groups formed by level

You get a ready-made small group: 4–7 children at one level, with agreed days and times. Recruitment, advertising and sales are on us.

Instead of: a month of hunting for students and a mixed bag of levels in one group
♛Premium

One-to-one students with a goal

The family comes with a goal — “a rating category”, “a tournament”, “confidence” — and already knows what it costs and how long it will take.

Instead of: haggling over price and “could it be a bit cheaper?”
◎Before the start

Assessment before allocation

We assess every child before the first lesson: level, pace, what they can already do. You get a group, not a puzzle.

Instead of: two “scouting” lessons and then reshuffling the group
♞Method

A four-stage programme

From meeting the pieces to rating category norms: lesson plans, puzzles by topic, checkpoints. The programme has been tested with 250+ families.

Instead of: your own course pieced together from other people’s textbooks
✎Method

Materials for every lesson

A presentation, a set of puzzles, homework and a parent report template. No need to prepare a lesson from scratch — just adapt it to your group.

Instead of: 30–40 minutes of preparation for every lesson
⌘Platform

A platform for lessons

An interactive board, games, a puzzle trainer and homework in one window. Children play between lessons, and you see their games.

Instead of: a patchwork of Zoom, Lichess and notes in a notebook
☰Organisation

Timetable and reminders

A register, lesson links, reminders for children and parents, attendance tracking. You receive a ready-made list for the week.

Instead of: “what time is it today?” messages every evening
✆Support

We deal with parents

Payments, rescheduling, missed lessons, dissatisfaction, refunds — all of this is handled by our support team. The coach doesn’t collect money or persuade anyone to stay.

Instead of: being “salesperson, accountant and coach” all at once
₽Money

Paid twice a month

For the lessons you have actually taught, with a breakdown: which lessons, with whom, at what rate. No deductions for finding students and no “platform fees”.

Instead of: a 20–30% tutoring platform commission and being paid “whenever the parent remembers”
♔Free

A mentor at the start

Your first lessons are run with a supervisor who watches, reviews and gives tips. No “here’s a group, you’re on your own”.

Instead of: learning the hard way on real children
✦Free

Teaching-method Wednesdays

Every two weeks the team reviews lessons, tricky cases and child psychology. The recordings stay in the library.

Instead of: paid courses on teaching children
♖Event

School tournaments and rating categories

Monthly in-house tournaments, brackets, certificates and rating category norms. Your students play — and your work gets results in numbers.

Instead of: “we seem to be practising, but it’s not clear what we’re achieving”
☀Seasonal

Summer intensives

Groups don’t break up in summer: we run short intensives and camps. Your workload and income stay, instead of collapsing for three months.

Instead of: an empty July and August with no students

Everything listed is part of the job and costs the coach nothing: we have no paid training, no fees for access to materials and no deposits.

A game for a place on the team

Four moves from application to your own group

Selection is set up like a game: first we get to know each other, then we test you in practice, then we train you — and only then do we trust you with children. Click a move and the board will show the position.

Starting position Morphy’s Opera Game, 1858 — studied at the third stage of the programme

We recommend: small groups + one-to-one

Keep your own students and build up to a full load

You already know how to keep a child at the screen for 45 minutes — that’s the hardest part, and it’s something we can’t teach. After that it’s only a question of a steady flow of students: ours is even and doesn’t depend on how much you spent on advertising this month.

  • You can keep teaching your own students in parallel — we don’t require exclusivity
  • You start straight away with two groups, and the internship is shorter
  • A rate above the starter level if your trial lesson confirms your experience
7 daysfrom application to your first group if you have online experience
18–24lessons a week — a full load
0 ₽spent on advertising and sales
We recommend: part-time

Tournaments stay your priority, coaching becomes a steady income

A competition calendar wrecks any timetable, so we have a format built around it: you take 4–8 lessons a week in convenient slots, and while you’re at a tournament a back-up coach takes your group. Your place and rate are kept.

  • We fit the schedule around your tournament calendar for the season
  • Cover during competitions — no penalties and you keep your group
  • Your tournament experience is a trump card in Prime tournament training

We recommend: small groups

Online evening slots — no commute and no paperwork

At clubs and youth sports schools, pay is tied to a pay scale and hours, and groups are filled “however it works out”. Here you work from home in the evenings, and reporting comes down to one template a month instead of paper registers and plans.

  • You can combine it with your main job: lessons from 16:00 to 20:30
  • Pay per lesson, not per academic hour on a pay scale
  • We count your group-teaching experience — the internship is shorter
0 kmof travel to a venue
1 reporta month using a template, 5 minutes
up to 7children per group, not 15
We recommend: part-time → small groups

Chess instead of evening tutoring

If you run a chess club at a school or centre and play yourself, that’s enough to start. Your teaching side is already strong — we fill in the chess method and work on the platform during training.

  • You can start with 4 lessons a week and grow by the next term
  • Ready-made lesson plans: preparing a lesson takes minutes, not an evening
  • We take a teaching degree into account when setting your level and rate
from 4lessons a week at the start

We recommend: one-to-one + groups

Russian-speaking families all over the world — your time zone is a plus

Our students live in different countries, so there’s nobody to cover morning and daytime slots on Moscow time. If you are in another time zone, that’s an advantage: we give you groups that otherwise couldn’t be formed.

  • We work with coaches from any country; lessons are in Russian
  • Payment under an agreement with a self-employed person (Russian tax status) or an individual entrepreneur — we’ll advise on registration
  • There is a bilingual format — lessons in English are paid at a higher rate

Who we hire — and who will find it hard here

We publicly promise parents and partners a minimum playing level, so we don’t lower it. Everything else is open to discussion.

Required
  • Candidate Master or higher under the Russian Chess Federation classification, or an equivalent rating
  • Tournament practice — not just theory
  • Willingness to teach children aged 5–17 using our programme
  • From 4 lessons a week in evening slots, Moscow time
  • A stable internet connection, a headset and a quiet place for lessons
  • Self-employed status (Russian tax status) or individual entrepreneur registration — we’ll help you set it up if you don’t have it
  • Fluent Russian
A plus
  • Experience teaching children aged 5–8 — the scarcest skill
  • Students who have achieved rating category norms
  • Experience of online lessons and working with an interactive board
  • English — for bilingual groups at a higher rate
  • Arbiting or organising tournaments
  • A teaching degree
Probably not a fit
  • If you are only prepared to work “your own way” and not with someone else’s programme
  • If you are only free during the day: children have lessons after school
  • If you need a salary that doesn’t depend on the lessons you teach
  • If dealing with children and parents annoys you and only the game interests you
  • If the plan is to take the school’s students for private lessons

What we promise in writing

Five terms set out in the agreement

A coach isn’t a disposable resource: replacing one costs more than keeping one. So our commitments to you are in writing, just like our commitments to parents.

01

Your rate is fixed before your first lesson

You know your per-lesson pay before you meet the children; it’s in the agreement and in your account. It changes only by mutual agreement — and in practice only upwards.

02

Paid twice a month

For the lessons you have actually taught, with a breakdown for each one. No commissions for finding students and no “platform” deductions.

03

Your workload — only by agreement

New groups and students don’t appear in your timetable without your “yes”. Want more? Add some. Tired? Cut back.

04

Students stay with you

We don’t move children between coaches to make the timetable easier. A transfer is only possible at the family’s request or if you leave.

05

Ill? We’ll cover for you

Every group has a back-up coach: the lesson goes ahead, the group stays yours, and there are no penalties for cancelling for a valid reason.

Want to see the programme before applying?

Questions every coach asks

Selection and getting started
What qualification do I need to be considered?+

Candidate Master or higher under the Russian Chess Federation classification, or an equivalent rating. This is the standard we publicly promise parents and partners, so we don’t go below it. A tournament rating alone isn’t enough, though: next we look at how you explain things and hold a child’s attention.

Do I need experience teaching children?+

No. If you play but have never taught, we give you introductory training in our method and an internship with a mentor: first you watch other coaches’ lessons, then you teach part of a lesson yourself, then you get your own group. We don’t put anyone in front of children without preparation — that would be bad for everyone.

How long does selection take?+

We review applications within two working days, then there’s a 30-minute interview, a trial lesson and a teaching-method test. It usually takes about two weeks from application to your first group.

Do I have to pay for training or the internship?+

Training is free, and the internship is paid at the starter rate. We have no fees for access to materials, no deposits and no “paid courses for candidates” — we pay the coach, not the other way round.

What equipment do I need?+

A computer or laptop, a stable internet connection, a headset with a microphone, a camera and a quiet place for the lesson. A phone or tablet isn’t enough: in lessons you work with the interactive board and materials in one window.

Work and workload
Do I have to find students myself?+

No. Recruitment, advertising, sales and filling groups are our job. You get a ready-made group at one level or one-to-one students who have already been assessed. Nothing is deducted from you for finding students.

What is the workload, and can I combine this with other work?+

From 4 lessons a week. Yes, you can combine it with other work — that’s common: our coaches include active players and club coaches. We agree your schedule in advance and never add new lessons to it without your confirmation.

Who deals with parents?+

Our support team handles all the organisational side — payments, rescheduling, missed lessons, complaints. From the coach we need a short monthly progress report using a template and answers about lesson content in the group chat.

What if I’m ill or away at a tournament?+

Let us know and we’ll arrange cover from a back-up coach — the group stays yours. There are no penalties for cancelling for a valid reason. We see tournaments as a plus, not a hindrance, and adjust the timetable to your calendar.

Can I teach my own students at the same time?+

Yes, we don’t require exclusivity: your private students and your club work remain yours. The one strict rule is not to move the school’s children to private lessons. That’s the one case where we part ways immediately.

When do lessons take place?+

The main flow is weekdays from 16:00 to 20:30 Moscow time and weekend mornings: children have lessons after school. For coaches in other time zones there are morning and daytime slots — exactly the ones nobody else can cover.

How long does it take to prepare for a lesson?+

5–15 minutes. The lesson plan, presentation, puzzle set and homework are already put together — you adapt them to your group rather than write them from scratch. One-to-one lessons take more: there you follow your own plan for the student.

What happens if a group doesn’t fill up?+

Filling groups is our job. If recruitment in your slot is slow, we offer another time or one-to-one students. We don’t pay coaches for empty slots, but we don’t impose them either: until there’s a group, you have no obligations.

Money and paperwork
How much do you pay per lesson?+

From 700 to 1400 ₽ per lesson, depending on the format (group, one-to-one, tournament training) and your level in the school. Your rate is fixed before your first lesson and can’t be changed unilaterally. We give exact figures for your case at the interview.

When and how do I get paid?+

Twice a month for the lessons you have actually taught, to your card or to your bank details as a self-employed (Russian tax status) coach. Each payment comes with a breakdown: which lessons, with whom, at what rate.

How is the working relationship set up?+

A service agreement with you as a self-employed person (Russian tax status) or an individual entrepreneur. We’ll help you register as self-employed if you haven’t yet. No fees, deposits or paid training: we pay you, not the other way round.

Are there any penalties?+

There’s no system of penalties. There are two reasons we part ways: repeated lateness and cancellations without notice, and rudeness to children or parents. Everything else is settled by talking.

How quickly can my rate go up?+

The first review is after your first month, then based on results: group retention, parent feedback, students’ rating categories. Coaches usually move from the starter to the standard level within one to two months, after which tournament training and mentoring open up.

What about personal data — the children’s and mine?+

We work in line with Russian Federal Law No. 152-FZ: we collect the minimum necessary data, obtain consent from a legal representative for children and don’t share data with third parties. The processing procedure is described in our .
